When commuters cross the Chester Bridge into Missouri from Illinois, they cannot miss the five fireworks stands located along the first mile. Many southern Illinois residents are making the annual trip over the border to Missouri, Kentucky or Indiana to purchase fireworks that are illegal in Illinois.

Listening to the lullaby versions of Metallica songs at work has become commonplace for Kit Peacock. Peacock, who has worked in the My Toys store in the University Mall for more than a year, said the independent and unique shop provides a haven from classes and other school-related stressors.

Some come from bustling suburbs; some from humble rural homes. Several have esteemed educational pedigrees. A few may have less schooling than those they are trying to help. Regardless of their differences, roughly 20 women and one man have united nearly every day this summer to find a way to help women and children who have been victims of sexual assault and domestic abuse.

Recent LSA graduate Polina Arsentyeva will see an extra $10 in her usual paycheck from Stucchi's after a state-wide minimum wage hike takes effect tomorrow, but Arsentyeva said the few additional dollars won't matter much to her.

"I don't think it's going to make that much of a difference, but maybe I just don't know because I'm not in a situation where I need the money to survive," said Arsentyeva, who has plans to keep scooping ice cream until she starts law school at Loyola University in the fall.
