A Ball State University student was released from Ball Memorial Hospital Friday after being attacked on Thursday morning.

Twenty-three-year-old Kyle Evans was transported to the hospital early Thursday morning, where he was treated for cuts and bruises on his head.

University police found Evans after responding to a call from 615 N. Dill St., at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the police report.

According to the report, Evans was attacked as he was walking home from the Village on North Dill Street.

The Muncie and university police departments are investigating the attack, although there were no witnesses to the event.

Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, said Ball State’s emergency notification system was not used to alert students of the attack because it happened off campus.

“All students are adults and we should all be aware that there are dangers out there,” he added. “We should make good safety decisions.”

I feel like if that this stuff is going to happen then maybe students to take matters into our own hands. I am sure everyone on here would love for the people who did this to this man to be "taken care of". The theory of the number of people is just a standard cop out for anyone. What would happened if he got jumped and three guys happen to see and then start fighting the other people, the university would sit there and say, "don't take matters into your own hands". I know i would love to have the people who did this to be jumped and then realize that this isn't a joke. The people who do stuff like this are weak pathetic cowards. What goes around comes around! Get better man and Happy Veterans Day!

Drew,
"To Protect and Serve". A nice slogan, and both are great ideals! Thank you for bringing them.

However, protecting by capturing known criminals is not the same as being your personal bodyguards.

Tweety -
The Police Department was NOT established to keep you safe. It was established to capture suspects and convicted criminals.

What about "To protect and serve"?

The Police Department was NOT established to keep you safe. It was established to capture suspects and convicted criminals.

You must keep yourself.

I feel terrible for you Kyle. Sorry someone wasn't there to help.

Get well soon Kyle

I have to agree with K.B. The more in depth article over on the Fox 59 news website has the title "Ball State student brutally beaten, mugged" which I think sums up what happened a lot more than simply saying that he was treated for "cuts and bruises on his head". You get cuts and bruises on your head from banging your head on a kitchen cabinet. As K.B. pointed out, Kyle had 110 staples in his head.....that's not cuts and bruises, that's having your head split open. I can only look at the way the Daily News presented this article and assume that they either A: Didn't bother getting all the facts or B: Trying to help the university save face during rough times in regards to crime.

Proudfoot seems to think that if you go out walking in a group that it will deter EVERY type of attack or whatever. Well yes there is safety in numbers, but sometimes it doesn't matter how many people you have with you...someone out there will still be assaulted unfortunately. I feel that had this student had 2 other people with him, that Proudfoot or someone at the University would say "Well there should have been 4 other with the student." or something along those lines. Yes students need to be aware of the surroundings, but responsiblity also lies elsewhere in addition to the students. Maybe UPD or Muncie PD need to step up patrols in these areas or have better lighting in the areas.

Blake I am going to go ahead and call you an jerk, just because I want to. I'm sure this kid, who happens to be a return soldier from Iraq, could have defended himself if he was just dealing with one attacker, but he was attacked by a group of people with weapons. I want to know how well you would defend yourself against 5+ people with tasers and bats. The article also failed to mention that this kid got 110 staples put into his head. That is major. I think the article seriously downplayed the injury by saying he was treated for bruises and cuts.

Blake-
The original articles put out state that the student was intoxicated. On his way home he was jumped.

The fact that this took place in the Village, which is connecting to campus, should make this relevent to students since this is where most students without transportation are going to go for drinks, food, or shopping. This also contains a BSFCU where most student workers are probably going to go to grab money from ATMs. Anything that happens in the village should be just as important and reported to students as something that would happen on campus.

Do you all think the DN is supposed to report on every single violent crime that happens off campus? The world is a dangerous place...be ready to defend yourself! It's not law enforcement's job or Ball State's job to protect you (on or off campus)...it's your own responsibility! I love how someone commented that it was better that this person was walking instead of driving drunk...the article makes no mention of alcohol involvement. Many people walk back from the Village on Thursday nights (or any night) with no alcohol in their system. Protect yourself...don't be a sheep and then get angry when bad things happen to you. When you are drinking think before you decide to go off by yourself...the greater your level of intoxication leads to a decrease in your ability to adequately engage an attacker and neutralize the situation.

“All students are adults and we should all be aware that there are dangers out there,” he added. “We should make good safety decisions.” Hey Mr. Proudfoot pull your head out of your A$$ at least he wasn't driving home drunk. I think that is the best "safety decision" he made. There is no way to know if your going to get the crap kicked out of you. How many other people walked home that night and didn't get attacked. Maybe students should arm themselves against those kinds of attackers.
