Ball State womens tennis coach Kathy Bull talks to her team during a meet last season. After being the Cardinals head coach for 21 seasons Bull was fired Tuesday because of self-reported NCAA violations.

Ball State University women’s tennis coach Kathy Bull was fired Tuesday because of violations self-reported by the Athletics Department to the NCAA on Monday.

Ball State announced the decision at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through a press release.

“We made the move [Tuesday],” athletics director Tom Collins said. “We’ll sit down tomorrow and we’re going to map out the next few weeks.”

Collins said that while they have reported the violation, it will be up to the NCAA to determine whether the infraction is a major or secondary violation.

The team is scheduled to compete in two more tournaments during the fall season: the ITA Tournament in Cincinnati this weekend and the Kennesaw Invitational in Kennesaw, Ga. next weekend. Collins said Ball State’s status for these tournaments is up in the air.

“We don’t know if we’re going to compete this weekend,” Collins said. “We’re going to figure that out tomorrow.”

Collins said that graduate assistant coach Amanda Pratzel and associate athletics director Karin Lee will supervise the team until a new coach is hired.

Ball State sports information director for the team, Joe Hernandez, said that the team was notified of the firing Tuesday by Collins. Hernandez also said that none of the players were available to comment on the situation.

The last time Ball State athletics committed a major infraction was in 2005 when athletes from about half of Ball State’s sports teams were found to use scholarship money to purchase textbooks for classes they were not enrolled in. The NCAA put Ball State on two year’s probation for the violation in 2007. The probation period ended Oct. 16, three days before the violations were reported.

From the time Ball State was placed on probation to the beginning of this school year, Ball State athletic teams had committed 27 secondary violations, two of which were committed by the women’s tennis team, according to documents obtained through the Indiana Access to Public Records Act. During the same span, the football team had five violations, while the softball and gymnastics teams committed four each.

Bull, who was unavailable for comment, has been Ball State’s head coach since 1988. In her 21 seasons, the Cardinals were 233-210 and never won a Mid-American Conference title.

The last coach to be fired from Ball State was former women’s volleyball coach Randy Litchfield in 2006. The five-time Mid-American Coach of the Year’s contract was not renewed after his team finished the season with a losing record for the first time in Litchfield’s 18-year tenure. Litchfield has said he believes the firing stemmed from he and his staff witnessing violations in 2006 by former men’s basketball coach Ronny Thompson that they were obligated to report, which eventually led to Thompson’s departure from Ball State. Litchfield filed a tort claim notification in the event that he wants to sue Ball State for wrongful termination. He has until July of 2010 to file the suit.

Bull reported to the Daily News in April that Ball State was under investigation for gender equity violations. As of October 13, the situation is still under investigation, according to Jim Bradshaw from the U.S. Department of Education press office.

the argument that you need to play the game to coach is lame.

so what your basicly sayign is that you cnat study enuff or watch enuff to see the same things anyone else with eyes and ears sees and hears.

its a stupid useless, pointless meatheaded argument.

Its all going down

Ms Rudder - It's "athletes" like you I couldn't stand while competing for four years as a Div. 1 athlete. Are you serious with your comments below? I'm willing to bet money on who you are because the athletes that admired and looked up to Coach Bull as a person and as a coach far outweighs the people that didn't. You're probably one of the lazy, whalelike looking, unmotivated and extremely annoying teammates we all had to endure during our years as college athletes because you thought it was your right to be on the team... Guess what? You suck, always have and always will. Now go and have sex with yourself! No one cares about you...you're a looooser...

As a matter of fact I was on Kathy Bulls team for much too long. So we can now discuss practices which, you will have to agree, were a joke. On top of the practices (which I wouldn't have bothered playing through when I was 12), the number of violations she broke in years prior to this year we should also discuss, if you know her coaching as well as I do. To answer your question, I unfortunately therefore never won a MAC Championship due to the coach you so positively stick up for. If you know anything about tennis at all you would know that she is unable to conduct a productive practice, she does have the great ability of making up the most ridiculous and unrealistic drills, she has NO idea how to be positive or encouraging to a team as a whole, she has obvious favorites and she provides useless tactics and information about the game of tennis. Never did I sit on the court and think, "oh yea she is right I should stand in the doubles alley in case the ball passes me down the line while my partner should cover the rest of the court." what idiot decides it is best to cover the most risky shot the opponent can hit?...Kathy Bull. And how about, in a singles match "Hit every single ball right down the middle of the court." That's another helpful one, I'm sure the opponents coach would have said the same! This tactic in other words says, don't make them run, don't use angles, give them the opportunity to hit their strongest shot off every ball and as a result, you run like a rabbit retrieving their balls and but them back in the middle of the court so you can run again. Now please tell me what great information she told you while you were on her team? And I guess YES Bull did have a winning record, in her 21 years she played 443 matches and lost 47% of them! (I think that's an F if she were to be graded) SO... if you would have been proud with that record then you would also be a failure of a coach! Good Luck to you!! Tell me the wisdom she filled you with!

Hey Pam Rudder--just wondering how many MAC championships you won? And which Division I tennis team you played for? And how many Kathy Bull led tennis practices you attended? Also--by saying that her losses almost equaled her wins, are you in fact inadvertantly making the point that she had a winning record? Also, just a quick point--graduating early is not quitting, and is actually somewhat commendable. If you played on the team at one point, then we can talk. You really must hate her.

Whoever the player was who admired Coach Bull was (I REALLY HOPE) in her volleyball team because if you were able to take any of her advice with the knowledge that it would make a positive impact on your tennis then I am terribly sorry to say you must have been a true beginner (i would love to know how your tennis looks!!!!!!! I'm sure it looks rather interesting!!!!!). FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE she doesn't have a clue how to coach, play or recruit and those who she did coach and recruit either left or came into the university playing better than when they left! Says a lot! And...
Dr. Phil, you expert psychologist, can't you tell that rather than angry, I am actually ecstatic regarding the situation! I think that if I suffered from one of the mental problems that you claim you can solve, I would now be cured simply by hearing this news!
I like BSU as a university and it deserves a good tennis team so lets be serious, it needs a coach who can achieve some results and it would be preferable if the coach didn't break rules constantly over the 2 decades she was there! (if any of you commenting on this article think that her lies are only 5months old, you are soooooooo mislead!)
She is so good she'd probably accidentally teach a beginner to hold the wrong end of the racquet and sometimes she looked at the tennis court as if she wanted to ask, what is that net doing in the middle! But u know, we all make mistakes, and in her defense, she may have accidentally sent her resume into the wrong department 21 years ago and if so, she just went with the flow!! who knows? If that's the case she can receive all the praise in the world!

Pam Rudder, you are angry and perhaps without your meds today. You have no clue about Kathy Bull, Ball State tennis, the sport of tennis or anything to do with sports for that matter. Take your pill, breathe in and out and repeat after me, "there's no place like home, there's no place like home." Then, when you figure it out, go and leave your moronic opinion to yourself, because it is embarassing to read it in a university student paper. If it doesn't work out for you to get a job in the BSU athletic department, do yourself a favor and don't apply for a journalism job. Your eighth grade grammar and editorial skills don't bode well for you. Now, let alllllllllll your anger out to the universe. Ahhhhhh. You are free.

Pam Rudder, have you ever even picked up a tennis racket? Coach Bull was awesome, and as a former player I can actually speak from experience.

Chris Evert, You absolute idiot. I hope you have nothing to do with hiring someone to fill Bulls position because if you are, Ball State tennis won't even exist in a few years and with stupid people like you standing up for one of the most idiotic coaches who can't even play tennis let alone coach it. If all coaches were like this woman, tennis would disappear as a sport all together. Move on, look at their shocking results, the number of players who have left or graduated early, Bulls non existent tennis career and her latest scholarship players then maybe you will realize that you may be a little bit wrong!! Plus her LONG STRING OF LIES!... i dont know what you think about a head coach lying left right and center but I'm pretty sure its not a positive. Let me tell you, lies don't just start, they must have been going on for YEARS!!! I'm positive they have!! The fact she has had so many players leave shows something! This woman has done NOTHING for 21years, not even a MAC championship. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I suggest if you are so concerned with what century we are in, that you should be in favor of getting finding a coach who can play tennis and someone who is even just slightly informed about tennis in the 21st century! I am sure with a name like Chris Evert you love the wooden racquet era but i think we have moved on both you and Bull clearly have much tennis experience! I wish you well with any tennis coaches you have contact with, you may need some help if you want to find a good one! (unless you want negative results!!!! then i suggest you knock on Bulls door, i think she is looking for a job!)
Dont worry about it

Chris Evert, do you want Bull's violations to be ignored? And her record is not very good.

As a Division I athlete, I believe that this action taken by the athletic department is long overdue. Her win/loss record over her 21 year career at Ball State should be the first clue that she is not a good coach. The team has not been close to contending in the MAC conference for at least four seasons. The second red flag would be her inability to keep the top players on her team. Specifically over the past five years, she has had two line-up players graduate early with one being a line one player. She also lost three players to transfers all from the same recruiting class, who played lines one, four and six. Ball State is a great university and it is a shame that the tennis program has been tainted by one coach.

Pam Rudder, you apparently have just surfaced from living in a cave with no knowledge that the 20th century has passed you by and you are now -- surprise -- living in the 21st century. You clearly have no clue, no background and no insight into college athletics, budgets, college tennis (or any tennis) and certainly not the laws associated with Title IX. The next time the athletic director position is open at Ball State, you will make the perfect candidate. Your ignorance matches that of Tom Collins and the department's proud hit man, Pat Quinn. I hope you don't express your opinions regularly in public, because you are a fool.
